“Wait!” Belinda suddenly stopped swimming. She stood still in the waist-deep water and cocked her head to one side.

“What is it?” Sarah asked.

“Shhh,” Belinda held up a warning finger. “Listen.”

Sarah stood up and listened. After a moment, she heard the unmistakable noise of an outboard motor, far away now but coming closer.

“Quick!” Belinda said. “Out of the water! Quick!”

Sarah scrambled ashore. People hereabouts knew that Belinda was living at the house, but no one knew that Sarah was here as well, and Mack had warned both of them repeatedly how important it was that Sarah’s presence remained secret. The two women reached the beach simultaneously and grabbed up their clothes and towels. The sound of the motor was getting louder now. Belinda all but pushed Sarah along ahead of her into the cover of the trees. They crouched down behind some bushes, dripping wet, and peered out cautiously. Off in the distance, they saw a battered old flat-bottomed skiff chug slowly across the far end of the lake and disappear behind the shore on the other side. There was one person in the boat, and whoever it was didn’t even look in their direction. Belinda started giggling nervously as she straightened up.

“That wasn’t even close,” she observed.

Sarah’s heart was still pounding as she stood up herself. “Maybe not this time,” she said. She started to shiver, but from reaction, not from cold.

Sarah subsided.
