Dark Angels by Jo-Anne Wiley

The deadly name game… There’s a killer systematically working their way through the secret membership of The Coven ” an organization of women who are drawn together by an obsession. What’s worse, each victim must provide the name of the next to die.
Lee is pulled into this horrifying abyss when her niece is savagely raped. Although she loves her niece, the thought of Mindy being held down is remarkably captivating, and unable to force the images from her mind, she makes Mindy repeat the story again and again. The allure of sexual assault becomes an addiction: Books, movies, a survivors’ forum. Using a police scanner, she’s always first at a rape crime-scene.
However, she notices a redhead who haunts the same backstreets, and when Lee is followed into a rape-center, it’s too much. She chases after the redhead to confront her, but the stranger is not intimidated:
“It’s obvious who you are,” the woman says. “And what you are. You may deny it, but you choose to walk the dark side. You look for despair where others seek happiness. You are touched by a woman’s pain; but for the wrong reasons. You prefer to move among tormented souls. You have come to realize that the very best sex is taken; not given.”
“I thought I was the only one,” Lee concedes.
“Oh child. There are others who live in the shadows. I’ll take you; and you will see: You have sisters; angels of darkness.
Non-consensual, stalking, control, violence, revenge.

Lee listens in abject horror to the sound of her friend being sexually mutilated. It’s a tape; recorded and sent to her by a killer who plays a deadly name-game.

“Please don’t cut me. No, not there.”

“Why not? What’dya need ‘em for?”

“Oh God, no. Aaaagh! No, oh no!” And the girl is shrieking piteously out of shock and the horror of what he is doing to her. Lee covers her ears to muffle the slushy sounds of hacking and the piercing wail being forced from between extended jaws. “Please, oh please… no more,” her friend is doggedly huffing. “I’m begging you. No more.”

“Yes! More! Now the other one!” he shouts over the sounds of a blade being slowly dragged through tender flesh. “More, until you give me a name, my dear.”

A curdling scream freezes Lee’s heart, the strength leaching from her body.

Her friend can no longer endure the sawing of the knife and, barely conscious, she finally concedes:

“Oh God… Lee,” the woman whimpers. “Her name is Lee… Lee McCormick. Yes, damn you. She’s a member of the Coven. Now please. Get me to a hospital.”

He laughs.

Lee cowers at the sound of her own name. She has just been branded as the very next to die.

Now Lee realizes that she must delve into the secrets of the Coven to save herself; race to discover who would destroy it. Before it has the chance to destroy her.

She listens again, but there is only the sound of the tape cassette, going ’round and ’round. The hiss. She turns it off and the stillness drifts in; entwining her soul in darkness.

Lee McCormick is drawn into this dark abyss when her young niece is brutally raped. Lee can’t force the images from her mind. Nor does she want to.

Lee loves her niece, no mistake, but the thought of Mindy being held down by three men is too delicious. Lee makes Mindy repeat the story, detail by detail, again and again.

The repugnant lure of sexual assault becomes a sudden addiction: Books, movies, porn, a survivors forum on the internet. And, using a police scanner, Lee is always first at a rape crime-scene with hopes of catching a look at the brutalized victim. But Lee starts noticing a flaming redhead who appears to be just as fascinated; who haunts the same back streets.

When Lee is followed into a rape crisis center, it’s too much of a coincidence. Lee chases after the woman. Confronts her. But the stranger is far from intimidated:

“It is so obvious who you are, Lee,” the woman tells her. “And what you are. You may deny it, dear, but you choose to walk the dark side of the street. You look for despair where others seek happiness. You are touched by a woman’s pain; but for all the wrong reasons. You crave lust over love; fact over fantasy. You prefer to move among the tormented souls. You have come to realize that the very best sex is taken; not given.”

“I thought I was the only one,” Lee concedes.

“Oh no, child. There are others of us who live in the shadows: A Coven. I can take you, show you; and you will see: You need never be alone, dear; ever again. You have sisters; angels of the darkness.
